How to Become an OLEV Registered Installer

If you are an installer or homeowner looking to have an electric vehicle charging point installed in a domestic premises, you may be eligible for an OLEV grant.

These grants offer you the chance to claim money back on installations, however, there is a criteria in order to claim, for example, installers must be registered with OLEV.

What is OLEV?

OLEV stands for the Office of Low Emission Vehicles. This is a part of the government that is there to support the market for ultra-low emission vehicles. OLEV is part of the Department for Transport and part of the department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

What is the OLEV grant?

OLEV offer two grant schemes, one for home-based installations and one for workplace installations. We are going to focus on the home-based installation scheme which is known as the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). In short form what this scheme essentially allows you to do is claim 75% of the cost of the installation and materials of the home charging point up to £350 for your customer (as of 1st April 2020).

There is a set of criteria that both the customer (i.e. the home owner having the charging equipment installed) and the installer must meet to be eligible for the grant. These key points are:

Installer:

In order to claim the grant, the installer needs to join a list of registered OLEV installers. To apply to join OLEV and become a registered installer, you will need:

  • Proof of membership with a government approved competent person scheme
  • Proof of your public liability insurance
  • Proof that you have been trained to install vehicle charge points
  • Proof that you are approved by a charge point manufacturer to install their equipment
  • Once this has all been submitted and verified you will be added to the list of OLEV approved installers and be eligible to claim the grant on your customers behalf.

Customer:

  • The vehicle must be on the list of approved vehicles
  • The customer must have off street parking that is associated with their property
  • The vehicle must have come into the owner’s keepership after 1st October 2016
  • If the vehicle is a company vehicle or a lease vehicle it needs to be the keeper needs to either be assigned or lease if for a minimum of six months
