What is the difference between our Domestic Electrician routes?

If you find yourself confused with the different domestic course routes available to you, we are breaking down our most popular course options, what makes them all different and which one is most suitable for you.

What domestic courses are available?

At Electrician Courses 4U, we offer four Domestic training routes, all of which contain essential qualifications that allow you to work competently as a domestic installer, as well as the practical skills you need to work confidently on site.

Domestic Electrician Course

You will gain the following qualifications:

City & Guilds 2393 – Level 3 Certificate in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings
City & Guilds 2382 – Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018
City & Guilds 2392 – Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification

Our most popular course route is the Domestic Electrician Course, which is a 15 day course spread out over 3 weeks (Mon-Fri). This course focuses on giving you the essential electrical qualifications to be able to competently work in domestic settings.

This course is intensive and there is a lot to be learnt within your 15 days of training. As with all of our courses, the Domestic Electrician Course includes a wide variety of practical, hands on training, theory training and also home study work in the evenings too. During the week 1 Key Stage course and week 3 Inspect & Test course, you will have access to two different practical workshops, where you will split your time between there and the classroom.

Inside the workshops, you will work through practical scenarios and watch demonstrations from our experienced trainers; this is to ensure that you fully grasp the technical skills before your final practical assessment in the week 3. You will have full access to our hand tools and testing equipment throughout your training with us.

After completing the course, you will be competent to carry out minor works in domestic properties. If you later decide you want to sign off your own notifiable work, as of September 2021, you will need to complete our Experience Course, L3 Testing, Inspecting & Periodic Package and Level 3 NVQ Electrical Installation Course. Domestic Electrician Course +

You will gain the following qualifications:

City & Guilds 2393 – Level 3 Certificate in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installations in Dwellings
City & Guilds 2382 – Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018
EAL 603/2625/6 – Level 3 Award in Electrical Installation Inspection, Testing, Certification and Reporting

Our newest course is the Domestic Electrician Course +, which is a 20 day course spread over 4 weeks (Mon-Fri). This course is the same as our Domestic Electrician Course for the first 3 weeks, learning the same course content, but you will further your understanding as you progress into your fourth week, which is the Level 3 Inspect, Test & Periodic course.

In the fourth and final week of your course, you will sit your two practical assessments for the Level 3 Inspect, Test & Periodic course and your online assessment. The incorporation of the Level 3 Inspect, Test & Periodic qualifications means that upon successful completion of the course, you will be competent and knowledgeable to carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports (otherwise known as EICRs or landlord periodic inspection).

As of the 1^st June 2020, these are a legal requirement for the private rental sector. The law states that a competent person must carry out the inspection and report every 5 years or sooner if specified.

As this Domestic Electrician Course + builds on from our 15 day Domestic Electrician Course, it remains that you will still have extensive hands on, practical learning within our workshops, with our experienced trainers. You will have full access to our hand tools and testing equipment throughout your training with us as well.

It’s important to note that for your Level 3 Inspect, Test & Periodic course, we carry a heavy emphasis on practical learning. For this reason, this course allows for substantial hands on time spent running through testing procedures within our workshops, to ensure you are prepared for your exam in the fourth week.

As of September 2021, after successfully completing the Domestic Electrician Course +, you will need to complete our Experience Course and Level 3 NVQ Electrical Installation Course if you would like to sign off your own notifiable work. Domestic Electrician Package

You will gain the following qualifications:

City & Guilds 2392 – Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification

Our unique Domestic Electrician Package is the only one of its kind in the UK and is a 20 day course spread out over 4 weeks (Mon-Fri). This Package continues on from the Domestic Electrician Course (15 day) with an additional week, our Experience Course, as the 4^th and final week.

The purpose of this extra week is the allow you to build your confidence and tools skills, in as realistic setting as possible. Within our training centre, we have a separate area which houses our mock flats that you only access during the Experience Course

In these flats, you will apply the skills you have learnt over the first 15 days of your course, for example, the basic wiring circuits from the week 1 Key Stage course, the regulations from week 2 and the testing and inspection skills from week 3.

During the Experience Course, you will wire up a mock flat from scratch, going from first fix to final testing, and also complete a full consumer unit change (going from an old, outdated board to a new, metal clad consumer unit). You will have the chance to make mistakes, learn from our trainers, gain essential tool skills (such as SWA armoured cable) to apply in the real world. You will have full access to our hand tools and testing equipment throughout your training with us.

This Experience Course is a week long, practical course that really allows you to put your newfound skills to the test in a stress-free, relaxed environment. You will also be taught how to complete a quote and estimate for your customer, as well as gain key marketing knowledge, so that you can launch your new business.

After successfully completing the course, you will be competent to carry out minor works in domestic properties. As of September 2021, if you are interested in joining a Part P Scheme Provider, in order to sign off your own notifiable work, you will need to enrol onto our L3 Testing, Inspecting & Periodic Package and Level 3 NVQ Electrical Installation Course. Which course is right for me?

What are you looking for? Are you looking to sign off your own notifiable work? Are you just looking to tackle minor electrical work in your home competently? Are you looking at a complete career change? Are you looking to take on periodic inspections in rental homes?

Our Domestic Electrician Course is perfect for those who have some DIY or tool skills, or those who work in an associated trade and are looking to add electrics onto their skillset. The course is intensive and gives you the core qualifications you need in order to work competently as a Domestic Installer.

Our Domestic Electrician Course + follows the same as above and is suitable for those who have some experience in electrics (whether that be DIY or associated trades), but you are looking to offer EICRs direct to landlords, homeowners or estate agents. This course will ensure that you are qualified and competent to carry out periodic inspections.

Our Domestic Electrician Package is best suited for complete beginners into the electrical trade and those looking for a career change. It focuses on building up your skills and knowledge from the ground up, going through basic wiring circuits, learning about the different regulations and testing for single phase circuits. The final, fourth week is what makes it best suited for those new to the trade as it teaches you essential practical skills you will need to know for on-site work. Although this Package does not include Level 3 Testing and Periodic training, you can go on to complete this course at a later point and then be able to issue EICRs.

What is a periodic inspection?

Periodic inspections are formally known as an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). They are commonly known as landlord certificate or periodic inspections. It’s important to note they are just a report on the condition of the wiring in the property, they are not a certificate and as such do not require the competent person completing the report to be Part P Scheme Registered (with NICEIC, ELECSA, NAPIT, etc).

Reports may include recommendations to improve the condition of the wiring or increase the regularity of inspections carried out. They must be completed by a competent person, i.e. someone who has either extensive experience within periodic inspections or a qualification to prove knowledge and understanding. We would always recommend undertaking a qualification course in periodic inspections before carrying out an EICR.
