There are a number of other good techniques for saving energy in your home. These will have an initial cost, however you will more than certainly get a return on your investment and indeed save additonal money over time.
Solar Panels
Currently in the UK, over half a million homes have solar panels installed on their rooftops, which is set to reach one million by 2015. Not only do solar panels save you money on your electricity bills; approximately £200 per year, but they are also a very eco-friendly system to have. In our modern society, we are finite on fossil fuels such as coal and oil, and at some point in the near distant future we will start to run out! However, the sunshine isn’t going anywhere any time soon, so why not use it? A great example of how solar energy can be even more beneficial is during summer. If you’re spending more on air conditioning during the hotter periods of the year, you’ll also be producing more energy from the piercing sunlight.
Changing to LED Lighting
Using LED lighting instead of fluorescent lighting, you can actually save up to 62% in costs and in total could use 75% less energy. In our current society, LED is the most modern form of lighting and is by far the most efficient. It may be that the inital price of each LED light is more expensive than slightly older lights such a fluorescents and incandescents, but over a period of 50,000 hours they will save you a lot of money. The average household has around 30 light bulbs. Taking into consideration how much money you save over the course of 50,000 hours for each bulb; which is £27, the average household will save approximately £840, not a bad option at all!
